International registration of a trademark

What does international Trademark registration mean?
Since the protection of a trademark is carried out only on the territory of the country in which it is registered, if your goods are manufactured for the international market, international registration of trademarks is necessary.

In order to avoid the need to register it separately in each country of the trademark, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) issues a permit for international registration, on the basis of a valid national registration or a national application in accordance with the Madrid System of International Registration of Trademarks. WIPO performs the administrative functions of the Madrid System for the International Registration of Trademarks.
Ukraine is a full participant of the Madrid system of registration of marks. By submitting a single international application to WIPO, Ukrainian citizens have the opportunity to register a trademark in any country participating in the Madrid system in a simplified manner.

In which country of the world can I register a trademark?
An international trademark can be registered in any country participating in the Madrid System of International Registration of Marks. The full current list of countries can be found on the official website of the World Intellectual Property Organization. The Madrid Agreement of the participating countries includes 97 countries.

Where and how to register an international trademark?
Registration of the international registration of a trademark provides for the submission of a general application, with a list of countries of interest. The examination is carried out by the World Patent Organization and, after verification, it sends information about the trademark to the offices of the countries specified in the application.

International trademark registration period:
Registration of an international trademark usually does not exceed 1 year from the date of application submission. However, under the Madrid Protocol, each of the participating countries has the right to extend the review period.
