Nostrification and apostille: what is the difference?

If you ever need to move to another country to study or work, there will be a need to familiarize yourself with concepts such as nostrification and apostille. What are they, what are their similarities and differences?

Nostrification

Nostrification is a procedure aimed at the recognition by the state of educational documents obtained in another country. After a thorough verification of the authenticity of the documents, confirmation of the status of an educational institution or educational program, assessment of qualifications or the period of study, and establishment of equivalence of an educational or educational-professional degree in Ukraine, a certificate is issued that confirms the fact of the consent of state authorities for the document to have legal force.
The applicant must be prepared to be required to provide additional documents that prove the level of education received, the availability of practical experience, admission to professional activities. They may request information about previous education, advanced training courses completed.

Apostille

Apostille is a form of document legalization on the territory of most countries of the world (USA, CIS countries, EU). The apostille itself is a square sign with a side of at least 9 centimeters. It is placed on a legalized document.

Similarities and Differences

The only similarity between apostille and nostrification is that these procedures are aimed at legalizing documents, in this case educational papers.

  • It should be understood that a legalized, but not nostrified, document on education cannot be legally used in the territory of the state in which the owner of the diploma or certificate is located. It simply will not have legal force, and on its basis it will not be possible either to get a job or to continue studying in the chosen specialty in another institution.
  • Another difference between the procedures is that nostrification takes much more time and resources. At a minimum, an examination is carried out and a separate certificate is issued, which makes it possible to use an educational document on the territory of the state. At the same time, an apostille is just a special sign, which is much easier and faster to put.
