The European Commission cancels the requirements for affixing an apostille stamp on documents within the EU

According to European Commission Law from February 16, 2019 in the European Union, new regulations begin to act concerning the authentication of documents issued by one EU State for use in other EU States.
Until February 15, 2019, the authenticity of official documents (such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, criminal record certificates) for other EU countries was confirmed by a special stamp - apostille. Now the apostille is not required. These innovations will significantly reduce the administrative burden for EU citizens. Also, translation of documents is no longer required, as they will be duplicated in English.

The essence of the new norm is as follows:
- Official documents issued in one EU state must be recognized as authentic in another state without a special apostille stamp;
- EU citizens are not required to translate the document, as a standard form of documents is introduced, including an English translation;
- Document authentication is possible online, using an electronic platform - the Internal Market Information System (IMI).
Important! In some countries (Slovakia, Hungary), the internal laws of the countries continue to be applied. It is necessary to specify in advance the need for an apostille in government agencies before submitting documents.

Documents covered by the innovation:
- About the birth
- About marriage (including marital capacity and marital status)
- On divorce, dissolution and invalidity of marriage
- About adoption
- About the place of residence
- About the absence of a criminal record
Multilingual forms of documents will not be issued in all EU countries.
